Lawn Care

Spring is a great time to start caring for your lawn. A well established healthy lawn requires less water, care, and maintenance during the summer. The following is a list of a few things that you can do now to help ensure that your lawn is healthy and strong:

Starting a New Lawn

Spring is an ideal time to start a new lawn or over-seed your existing lawn

  • When starting a new lawn spread a layer of fresh top-soil and mix it in with the existing soil, up to six inches deep
  • When over-seeding apply a thin layer of soil so that the old grass can still be seen
  • Even out any depressions to ensure a nice level lawn
  • Apply the grass seed and water in well

Watering your lawn

Spring rains tend to give your lawn enough water that you will not need to water until later in the season

  • If we receive a week of sunny weather you should consider pulling out the sprinkler to water the lawn
  • When watering use the "Tuna Can Test" to determine if you have watered enough
  • Place empty Tuna cans in a few places on the lawn
  • When the Tuna can is full you have watered enough

Mowing your lawn

  • As the warmer spring weather arrives you will need to prepare for mowing your lawn in the summer
  • Now is a good time to tune up your lawnmower and sharpen the blade
  • A sharp lawn mower blade cuts the grass cleanly reducing the chance of disease and making a cleaner looking lawn

Applying Moss Control

  • Spring is the best time to control the moss in your lawn
  • It is best to apply moss control on a clear sunny day
  • Moss control comes in a liquid or granular form
  • After a day or two the moss turns black and needs to be removed with a mechanical power rake
  • If you do not remove the dead moss it prevents the grass from growing and the moss will grow back
  • After removing the dead moss apply a thin layer of new soil and then grass seed to fill in the spaces

Fertilizing your lawn

  • Spring is a great time to lime and fertilizer your lawn
  • Lime provides calcium and other nutrients to your lawn as well as balancing the pH in the soil
  • Fertilizer provides Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potash as well as other micro nutrients to the lawn
  • It is best to apply Lime and fertilizer on days where it is going to rain or to water the lawn for an hour after applying
