Weigela

The weigela is a reliable and diverse shrub, being a true stalwart in any garden situation. This hardy shrub (zones 4 to 9) is drought resistant, loves full sun, but can tolerate some shade. It’s various coloured trumpet flowers bloom from mid may through June. Sometimes they will give sporadic blooms later in the season.
The flowers which come in red, pink, and white and every shade and hue in between attract butterflies and hummingbirds which is an added bonus to beautify your garden.
Weigelas grow in average soil, but must have good drainage. They detest “wet feet”.

Prune dead branches in early spring or prune after flowering to keep it in shape. To reduce the size and rejuvenate an over grown shrub, prune out 1/3 of the oldest canes. This will encourage new, vigorous growth and in time, will lover the height. If the gardener just lops off the top of the shrub, it will turn into a top heavy multi-stemmed mess.
There are different sizes and colours of weigela to suit any garden situation. The following is a brief list of the dwarf and larger sized most popular weigelas.
